Study of the interaction of solutes with Σ5 (013) tilt
Substitutional alloying elements significantly affect the recrystallization and austenite-ferrite phase transformation rates in steels. The atomistic mechanisms of their interaction with the interfaces are still largely unexplored. Using density functional theory we determine the segregation energies between commonly used alloying elements and the Σ5 (013) tilt grain boundary in bcc iron.

Get PriceThe interaction of oxygen vacancies with grain boundaries
The diffusion and segregation of oxygen vacancies near a grain boundary in m-HfO 2 is investigated by first principles calculations. We find that both neutral and positive vacancies segregate to the grain boundary. Positive vacancies which are mobile in the bulk with activation energies for diffusion ∼ 0.7 eV have enhanced mobility parallel to the boundary plane but once at the boundary

Get PriceColossal grain growth yields single-crystal metal foils by
Nov 30 2018 · Single-crystal metal foils are valuable for their surface properties that allow for synthesis of materials like graphene. Jin et al. present a strategy for creating colossal single-crystal metal foils called "contact-free annealing" (see the Perspective by Rollett). The method relies on hanging and heating commercially available inexpensive cold-rolled metal foils.

Grain size is an important parameter in evaluating the properties of microstructures in metals. In this paper the attenuation coefficient of Rayleigh waves is introduced to characterize grain size in heat treated 316L stainless steel. Rayleigh wave attenuation is measured using an angle beam wedge transducer as the transmitter and an air-coupled transducer as the receiver.

Two-phase bimetal composites contain both grain boundaries and bi-phase interfaces between dissimilar crystals. In this work we use a crystal plasticity finite element framework to explore the effects of grain boundary interactions on the plastic stability of bi-phase interfaces. We show that neighboring grain interactions do not significantly alter interface plastic stability during plane

A grain is surrounded by grains with different crystal orientations in polycrystalline plain low-carbon steel. The grain is constrained by its adjacent grains in the tension process. The interaction of the grain with the adjacent grains was investigated within the elastic deformation region. The following results have been obtained (1) the Young s modulus of a grain without consideration of

Grain refinement to the nano/ultrafine-grained regime can make metals several times stronger but this process is usually accompanied by a dramatic loss of ductility. Such strength-ductility trade-off originates from a lack of strain-hardening capacity in tiny grains. Here we present a strategy to regain the strain-hardening ability of high-strength metals by incorporation of extrinsic
